Would You PLEASE Stand Still?!

Do you have a tough time being still?  Most of my growing years, my mom would plead with me to stand or sit still.  “Robyn, would you PLEASE stand still!!”  “Robyn, sit still!”  Oh, I can hear that ringing in my ears right now!

It was pure torture to sit in the church pew while my dad, Pastor Bellville, would go on and on and on and…well, you get the picture.  Every. Single. Sunday.  Oh, when we sang upbeat hymns and choruses, it wasn’t long before my body would just start moving to the beat.  “Robyn, stand still”, Mom would say as she grabbed my arm.

During the sermon, in ten minutes, I would begin fidgeting with the hymnal, untying my brother’s shoe, turn around and look at people around me, etc.  “Robyn, don’t be such a wiggle worm.  Sit still!”  Sometimes, I would just  lean on my mom’s shoulder or lay on her lap and go to sleep.  It seemed like Sunday’s ritual for me after church was, “Go to church, get a spankin’…go to church, get a spankin’.”  I wanted to be good, but my body just wouldn’t cooperate!

Today, this reminds me of how important it is to be still before the Lord.  This loud and crazy world seems to grab our attention away from being still and enjoying His peace, doesn’t it?

“Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him…”  Psalm 37:7

“Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”  Psalm 46:10

Beginning today, try to take at least 5 minutes every day to sit still before the Lord God, breathe deep and seek His peace.  Maybe that 5 minutes can turn into 10 minutes and then 15.  Before you know it, you may hear His voice in your mind and begin to value your quiet time with Him.  Try it!

Would you PLEASE stand still before the Lord?
