Have you ever felt like you were drowning in grief? Maybe it was from the sudden loss of a loved one, or their death after a lengthy illness. Maybe it was the death of an elderly parent. Maybe you have grieved the loss of a marriage, a pet, a job, or an important relationship. You know the feeling…sinking deeper and deeper into depression and you don’t know a way out. It seems hopeless for a time.
Then, all of a sudden, something inside of you says, “Wait a minute! This isn’t what life is all about! I need to care enough about myself to find resources and answers about how to rise from this depth of grief. My kids need me to become strong again and find a way out.”
There are many “pat Christian answers” and scriptures in the Bible that someone can show you, but the fact is, the depth of hurt you feel is real and it will take more than these things to begin to lift you higher. Sometimes, well-meaning people don’t know what to say, so they either ignore you or can say insensitive things like, “Well, just remember that they are in a better place” or “All things work together for good to them who love God.”
If you are grieving about a loss right now, feel what you feel, and when you feel strong enough to take even the tiniest step toward healing, reach upward to the God who loves you and understands what is draining your heart.
“As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for You, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God? My tears have been my food day and night, while men say to me all day long, ‘Where is your God?’ These things I remember as I pour out my soul; how I used to go to the multitude, leading the procession to the house, O God, with shouts of joy and thanksgiving among the festive throng. Why are you downcast, O my soul? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him, my Savior and my God.” Psalm 42:1-5
