Prized Possessions

What is your most prized possession?  Is it your car?  Your 65″ flat screen?  A “blanky” from your childhood?  A special ring once worn by your grandmother?  Your baby daughter’s first StrideRight shoes? Your great-grandfather’s toolbox?   Your  mother’s yellowed  wedding dress?  What do you own that makes you smile from the inside out and proud to own;  that connects you to special memories or accomplishments?

For me, my most prized possessions connect me to my father, who was my hero in every way.  I have his Bibles that he studied his sermons from, some notes from past sermons and the most precious of all is the picture of him holding me and praying over me when I was one year old.  It is a black and white photograph that sits in a frame above my desk.  It is a constant reminder that he was supporting me in prayer even then and continued to pray for me until he went to be with the Lord he loved and served most of his life.  I weep, even now, at how I miss him and wish he was here to see the ministry that God has led me to do and that I have dedicated to my dad’s legacy of ministry.

I value my marriage, our kids, our granddog, my heart friends and the ministry.  I enjoy our home, our hot tub, vacations we have taken, holidays, going out to restaurants and cute shoes, but the things that warm my heart and make me the most grateful are the people who God has put into my life and the calling He has put on my life.

Think for a moment of what the most prized possession is in your life?  Why is it that important to you?  How does it make you feel?  How devastating would it be if you lost it? Are things, accomplishments, titles and awards more important than things of eternal value or relationships?

“If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him?  Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth.”  I John 3:17

Take some time to look at that most prized possession and think of what and who it connects you with.  On an eternal value, let our most prized possession be Jesus Christ, His sacrifice and resurrection, so we could have eternal life with Him someday.  Now, THAT’S a prized possession beyond what’s here on earth!!!
