What is going on?! Just when I think things are getting better racially in this country, everything explodes with anger and violence! Why does this hatred and rage continue?! My heart hurts for us and for the next generation.
Each race has its own opinion and experience; it’s own perceptions and assumptions. Words and categorizations divide us. Closed eyes to others’ experiences. History divides us because we think it remains the same. Stereotypes split us and keep us polarized. STOP!!!
Because I am a believer in Jesus Christ, my perceptions and beliefs come from Him. I cannot be swayed by others’ perceptions, but I must have an open heart to the experiences and pain of others. I must open the arms of Jesus to ANYONE He puts in front of me, no matter what race they are, the beliefs they have, or the opinions of me they may have because of the color of my skin or my belief systems.
I believe we are all guilty of prejudice at some level, but I also believe we can be misunderstood too. When I say a really pretty black woman did something really amazing, my description is not about a different race, it is just a way of describing her. I could also describe her as a woman with gorgeous dark eyes, or pretty black hair. It has nothing to do with prejudice. I would not be offended if someone called me a pretty white woman, but then, I haven’t had negative experiences like others may have had because of race.
Where do we go from here? It is uncomfortable to have to “walk on eggshells”, but we must be sensitive to others and be kind. We must be willing to listen and learn from those who have experiences we have not had. We must show compassion and goodwill to all and just do our best not to offend. We don’t need to get all high and mighty and say, “Well, THEY just need to get over it.” We can adjust, in the name of Jesus and be willing to learn. At least, that is what I am going to continue to do.
“Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave Himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.” Ephesians 5:1,2 (Did you see anything in this verse about different races? NO!)
