Eye Exams

The world of technology has turned our world around and yesterday, I saw how it has affected the world of optometrists and other eye doctors.  I waited in a dark room for my eye doctor to step into the room.  I was surrounded by a variety of equipment and then saw “the white eye chart”.  How familiar those letters were, as I focused on them to see how clear my eyesight was.

The doctor walked in, greeted me and began to ask me questions about my eyesight.  I had noticed over the last few months that I needed a new prescription.  With that, he began his exam.

Sitting in that dark room, I began to think about how we see the world.  Sometimes we see our situation clearly and sometimes it can get blurry.  We can become complacent, distracted, and overwhelmed and our “eyesight” can begin to fade.

Back to the exam….  The doctor had me look away as he focused a bright light on my eye.  That reminded me of how the Holy Spirit can shine a light on the deepest and darkest part of our soul.  That is when we can begin to make changes and find healing; when we let Him “see” us.

Well, now was the fun part where the doctor had me look at that familiar chart and said, “Which is stronger; 1 or 2?  How about now?”  This went on for about ten minutes until he could figure out the new prescription I would need.

Once again, I began to think about our “spiritual eyes” and the prescription we need for spiritual health.  We can read a bunch of books, search for answers through people’s teachings, look and listen to endless solutions to life’s problems, or Iwe can go to the Word of God for the most precise prescription of all…God’s Truth.  All things are clear there, with the illumination of the Spirit.  There are no blurry lines there.

“I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you  may know the hope to which He  has called you, the riches of His glorious inheritance in the saints and His incomparably great power for us who believe.”  Eph. 1:18-19
