You know how it is…company will be here in 45 minutes and you are rushing around picking up the last things that are out of place, and then you see it…that room that seems to collect everything you don’t know where it belongs. That little room in the back of your house. You know…”the junk room!” You quickly throw the last thing in that you picked up in the living room, and firmly shut the door. Whew!
You don’t have to look in that room again unless you open the door. One day, months later, you look for something and can’t find it, so you take a deep breath and open the door to…”the junk room.” Whoa! Where to begin? How did THAT get in here? Oh, THAT”S where that is! You take a flying leap and begin the process of cleaning out the junk room and what you find there brings all kinds of thoughts and emotions. It takes hours and hours of separating, and making decisions to keep, throw away, or give away, but at the end of this challenging process, you close the door; this time with a sense of accomplishment and a smile. Ahhhhh!
This process of cleaning reminds me of our own lives, where we toss our past mistakes, joys, sorrows, accomplishments, childhood memories, relationships in a room and firmly shut the door and go on with our everyday lives.
A day comes when we see something that hurts us from our past and want to desperately “clean it up” so it doesn’t have power over us anymore and keep messing our life up. As we “open the door” to our past, we can be overwhelmed and surprised at what is in “that room.” The deeper we dig, the more we find, and when we face it, pick it up and own it, forgive, find God’s healing and His perspective on it, we are healed and “cleaned up.” We can strip ourselves of the lies Satan has attached to us through it all and when we find true healing, we can “close the door” with a sense of accomplishment and freedom, and we can smile again. Ahhhhhh!
What is in your “junk room” today and are you willing to “open the door” to clean it out with the help of the Lord God? It’s hard work, but well worth the time and effort. Maybe the junk filling your room is an extra marital affair, horrible abuse to you, an abortion, secrets and lies, a crime, addictions that caught and enslaved you, divorce, or any other kinds of junk. Is it time to clean it up? Imagine what it would be like to be able to just “leave the door to that room open; all aired out and beautiful.
